Hailing from the Blue Mountains near Sydney, award winning Australian solo artist Claude Hay blends slide guitar, bass and drums to create music that invokes the best of stomping traditional blues, hard rock and booty-shaking funk, all delivered with chops to burn and a vocal range to match. As winner of Best Live Act at the Australian Music Independent Awards (2013), Claude is perhaps the world’s ultimate Do-It- Yourself musician – forging his live sound on the back of looping technology which allows him to create a band vibe without the band. This approach has seen this fiercely independent artist build an audience for his music globally with the release of three award-winning home-made albums plus a live DVD release.
Hay’s second album Deep Fried Satisfied charted in the top ten of US’s Blues Billboard charts (2010) and top 5 in the Amazon Blues Charts of 2010. He has won the Australian Blues Music (Chain) Award for ‘Best Song’(2011) and Best Male Vocalist (2013). The single “I Love Hate You” topped Australia’s Amrap single charts (2013) whilst “How Can You Live with yourself” hit number on one Triple J’s Unearthed charts in 2009.
His music has seen him travel through USA and Europe annually. Notably he has appeared on USA’s National Public Radio Network (which boasts a weekly listenership of about 27 million) and live on national free to air TV in Netherlands on their prestigious music programme Vrije Geluiden (which led to invitations to perform at their top line festivals of the region including the world’s largest motor racing music festival Zwarte Cross.
Hay is renowned for building his own guitars, typically a new guitar is born with a new album. there’s ‘Betty, his double-necked guitar/bass which he made out of a kitchen bench top; there’s‘Stella’, his ‘Cigar Box’ guitar which started its life as a six dollar baking tin and this year there is Lucy – she has a special pick up in her that allows him to play multitudes of instruments, from piano to trombone to organ as well as an acoustic and electric guitar.
Hay started a side rock-band project in 2015 called The Gentle Enemies with their debut album to be released later in the year with a European tour!
