“Barker’s harsh, soulful voice warmed both body and mind, having a solid range that goes from ragged to mournful in an instant … I was hooked.” • Lost Magazine
After 2016 saw Joel Barker tour across WA, including the State of the Art, Hidden Treasures and Nannup Music Festivals as well as WAM’s Wheatbelt Touring Circuit, Barker recently released his anticipated new E.P ‘Uncharted’.
Hailing from Bridgetown, Barker’s music frolics easily between soft melodic indie songs, rollicking countrified lilts and rock with surprising vehemence. Conjuring comparisons to Bon Iver, Glen Hansard and Damien Rice, Barker’s emergence on the national music scene is undeniable and exciting.
A true incarnation of a contemporary folk artist, Barker conjures tales of the people around him and sonic, guitar-driven musings on his surroundings. The spotlight now turned to Western Australia’s Port City, the EP’s second single ‘Crane’ is a prime example of this, talking about the relationship between a machine and its long time operator.
Working closely with his fellow song-writing community, Barker also curates events such as 1x1x1: a night that focuses on delving into the hearts and minds of local solo musicians. He is also one of the faces behind the immensely popular Folk In A Box Project: an intimate, one-on-one performance space, literally held inside a wooden box constructed and toured by Barker himself. These projects have toured to the likes of Sydney International Arts Festival, Fringe World Festival and the Venice Biennale, with an overwhelmingly positive reception from audiences and artists alike.
