Guitarist/Singer/Songwriter Ross Ward’s first ‘Bluesfest’ appearance was in ’95 , where the idea for the band ‘Ward’s Xpress’ was conceived. That’s a little over twenty years of keeping a band working that is musically committed to originality and in a constant persuit of excellence (along with a deep love of The Blues!). For Ross, it’s also been over 45 years as a guitar player, working and recording with some of the best artists and musicians in this country over that time. Ward’s Xpress remains as one of Sydney’s hardest working live outfits.
In July 2015, ‘Wards Xpress’ celebrated their 20th anniversary by releasing ‘The Back Roads’ retrospective album (a remastered selection of tracks from the band’s back-catalogue). The CD hit the Number One position on the ‘Australian Blues & Roots Airplay Chart’ and stayed there for the next three months, giving the band their second consecutive No. 1, after the success of 2012’s ‘Five Lanes’.
“Covering tracks from the band’s five releases from a career spanning 20 years, this one is a collection of gritty and muscular pub blues, imbued with Ward’s trademark taste and style. Ward switches between electric and lap steel, the latter providing on a number of tracks a hard-edged, thunderous groove, his voice gravelly and strong, an essential ingredient to this brand of the blues.” • Samuel J. Fell, Sydney Morning Herald
“There is something about this CD that stands out. The songs are really good but that’s only part of it. It’s somewhere in the mix of the quality of Ross’ playing, his fantastic layering of guitar parts, his use of effects, the sidemen, and the quality of the recording, that the planets all align, and the result is something special.” • Gary DeWall, The Blues Times
